Cloud downtime, 360

Published on November 18th, 2011

Fear of downtime should not deter cloud adoption

IT leaders ignoring cloud computing because they believe in-house systems are inherently stable should consider research by City Lifeline which says that 60 per cent of businesses already suffer unexpected downtime.

One of the biggest barriers to cloud adoption is fear that either the network or the remotely hosted software could fail and IT teams would be powerless to action a fix.  However, the businesses who admitted that downtime still occurs report that six hour outages are commonplace.  For mid-sized businesses, failure of internal IT costs on average £14,000 every day.

The businesses surveyed would also benefit from automatic backups that cloud offers, with less than half bothering to back up each week, despite the fact that 90 per cent of mid-sized businesses who experience data loss are forced to close within two years of the incident.
